Overview

The Games for Change Asia-Pacific mission is to foster the development and use of games that make the world a better place. We strive to empower people through the medium of games, including those in the Asia-Pacific region who may not otherwise have a voice. Our activities include promotion, facilitation and education of games that support positive change, skill building, and development of mutually supportive networks and connections. We also drive critical dialogue on defining what games can be.

Sound Scouts - Testing the Range of Serious Games

Let's get serious about the things we can achieve by harnessing the magic of games. Sound Scouts, the hearing screening game, is just one example of how gaming technology can be applied to serious health issues. We will share the Sound Scouts journey of development, from ideation to implementation, from inspiration to hesitation. The rigor involved in creating a digital medical device, in the form of a game, can not be underestimated but it can be accomplished with grit and determination. Fun and games leading to better health outcomes, is something we can all strive to achieve.

Wik and Kugu Children game learning about Olive Ridley Turtle conservation on their homelands

In remote western Cape York in Queensland, the APN Rangers implement land and sea management on their traditional homelands south of the Archer River. Come rain, mud or scorching heat, you will find the APN Rangers on their side-by-sides monitoring Olive Ridley turtle nests and managing predators. Baits, trapping, screen protecting and scaring pigs are all part in conserving the next generation of turtles on these homelands. Through this game Wik and Kugu children learn about turtle conservation actions and the different predation management methods, whilst also building digital literacy in preparation for the next generation conservation tool kit. Like conservation, a collaborative approach has been taken by the partners: APN Cape York North Australian Indigenous Land and Sea Management Alliance (NAILSMA), Commonwealth Science Industry and Research Organization, Two Moos, and Aurukun State School with funding from the Nest to Ocean Program, Department of Environment and Science Queensland.

Building An Augmented Reality Cultural Student Game In Three Months - CtrlD Studio - Malaysia

A breakdown and explanation of developing an Augmented Reality (AR) equipped mobile game as a student, to showcase and shine a light on one of the oldest traditional artforms in Borneo – hand-tapped tattooing. I will take a dive into the process, starting from ideation, to sourcing inspiration, to how it unexpectedly bagged an award and gained international attention. Last but not least, how I learned the importance of involving cultural practitioners when telling cultural stories.
